  1. First Homework Assignment:

I can recall having a great teacher in high school for my College Accounting 1 class
Her name was Mrs. Hunte and she is form the island of St. Kits in the Caribbean. I can remember her high level of enthusiasm for teaching young kids in high school the difficulties of accounting, but also how complexly interesting it is at the same time. Mrs. Hunte always wanted the best for the students so she pushed is very hard in the classroom but it was always worth the little tough love she implied on the students that always seemed to shine on test days. Her island accent was tough to understand come the first day of class, but it was an unusual change that I actually grew accustomed to by the second week of class. Sitting in the front of class I cannot recall the countless conversations we herd either about our weekends, life, or even questions pertaining to class work; she always cared about the kids. A teacher like this one that students like myself will always remember for their kindness, devotion to students and great friend to have outside of the classroom. Mrs. Hunte always dressed in appropriate business like manner. Her black pleaded pants cut off at a boot-cut length where her black dress shoes, usually heals that made her taller than she really was. The solid colored dress shirts seemed to always complement her slender figure. Even though that Mrs. Hunte seems very straight edge, an interesting fact I found out about her was that she was named Miss. Kit’s during the 1980’s, which year I do not remember exactly. During the beginning of the year I can also reminiscence on her telling us about her two daughters and beautiful husband that she loved dearly. She was also a deep and faithful Christian and went to church religiously every Sunday with her loved ones. I have one found memory of her speaking to me on the last day of class. I remember as I gave her a hug and left the class room her saying in the sweetest and compassionate sincere voice, “ Ryan, you are one of the hardest working and genuine students I have ever encountered teaching at SBHS and where ever you decide to go in life I know that you will excel greatly given the hard work and dedication you have shown and put forth in my class room. I hope nothing but the best for you in your future, and keep in touch.” A that statement coming from a teacher like her is something I didn’t find to rarely in high school, which is why Mrs. Hunte has had a great impact on me, and made me remember her for the great high school teacher she was to me, and continues to be to this day.

    Essay – 1/25/2012

Ms. Matthews, or should I say “Professor” Matthews, was my English Professor at Bloomfield College. Professor Matthews was a straight forward intelligent African American woman. She was very professional and very direct in what she expected from all her students. Some would say she was very intimidating and not very friendly.

Our class started with about twenty-five students and ended with about six. This class was very challenging and difficult for me. I remember once sitting in the Duncan Donuts parking lot crying because I got a “D” on my writing assignment. After that, Professor Matthews encouraged her students to stay late so that she could go over some writing techniques to help strengthen our writing. Ms. Matthews mostly talked to us about the importance of education; she often reiterate to the class that education was the one thing that no one could take away.

After our meetings we continued to talk and we got to know each other as friends. I discovered through our conversations that she lived only two towns away from me. We also learned that we frequented many of the same business establishments in our area. Ms. Matthews stood about 5’9 and all her cloths draped on her like a high fashion model. She would often wear long flowing shirts with wide belts. I asked her if she ever modeled before or considered a career in modeling. She would thank everyone for the compliment but replied by saying she chose to go to college instead. I told her how I admired her and for making education her priority. She would tell me stories about how her parents expected each of their children to graduate from college. All her siblings are college graduates and hold positions such as dentist, film producer and professor.

We also spoke about her teenage daughter Belinda, who was about to go off to college to study psychology. I thought that was such a coincidence because my son had gone to college for the same thing and was about to graduate the following year.

Ms. Matthews shared some other personal things with me such as how she survived a stroke. She told me two years prior, that she had had a stroke and at one point, did not know if she would ever be able to teach or be independent again. I was so amazed by her story because just by looking at her, you would never know her struggle. She made such an impact in my life that I was inspired to persevere no matter how difficult this class was. My admiration and respect for her has shown me that we must continue fighting for what we want to achieve.

It is apparent that she came from a background of educators. Some families in the twenty-first century are actually seeing for the first time college graduates. Families such as Henrietta’s were not educated and they were very much unaware of certain laws and rights that affected them.

  7. I met Heriberto Santiago, professor of Social Science and Philosophy, when I was in 9TH grade, barely 14 years old. Upon entering the classroom the first impression that he reflected was to be strict, serious and traditionally formal. He wore trousers straight black with a white shirt tucked in. Super clean and organized. It measured about 6 feet and 1 inch approximately, with a husky voice and big, hard eyes. His lack of hair spoke of his years of experience. Immediately it entered the salon he spoke to us clearly about its requisites, intentions and goals in its respective classes. He was the professor with whom more contact we had because we were taking 4 days a week classes with him. Most of the students at first were feeling a little intimidated and restricted to be themselves due to the fear of doing something wrong. Mr. Santiago usually used to call someone in front of the class, to ask about the last class and evaluate them orally. Everyone was terrified of being the one he was going to call. However, he always knew how to maintain a good relationship between students-teacher without disrespect.
His Philosophy classes were basically theories about the origin of the universe. He loved discussing theories and put them into flat concrete and clear understanding. He was characterized by its extraordinary loyalty to his friends. Mr. Santiago along with two more teachers, are known as "the 3 musketeers". They are best friends for ages. His friends have great respect for him and described him as someone with a well-developed value system, extremely responsible and hard working. In spite of their strong friendship, he has always been very independent. Once in class he told us that his interest for Philosophy was born because he felt the need to have an explanation of how and why the existence of the human being. Due to his broad knowledge and study of different theories he has never been a religious man.
He strongly believes in the existence of a "higher power" as he calls it. Nevertheless, he respects the people who do believe.
Leads a fast-paced lifestyle. Always have 2 or 3 ongoing projects about school, besides giving classes on 4 different courses and last but not least important, teaches at an University.
I remember a day we were talking about the family and he mentioned he was married to the woman he loved and said, "if I had the opportunity to choose again, I would choose her again”.
They have two children, a boy and a female of 10 and 6 years old, respectively. In his spare time he loves to spend time together as a family. I also recall having asked a day, “Which has been one of the most difficult experiences to deal with it in life?” His reply was "The death of my father." "He died of a heart attack without having shown signs of ill".
In those 4 years, I came to know his humble and polite person who exists below that suit of seriousness of the first day. He always expected the best from me, which always made me, feel capable and secure with myself. At the same time pressured me a little, because I didn’t want to disappoint him. I believe that just takes the influence of one person to help you see yourself in a whole new positive dimension. By the time I was going to graduate Mr. Santiago told me that I had a great potential to offer to the world and that never give up on my dreams. Those simple words have made the difference since then.

Assignment: Comparison to Ethel in the book.
We decided to go to the coffee shop and catch up on news about our families. She talked about her cousin Jackie, whom she had heard had been involved in some very bizarre behavior. Jackie’s parents adopted her when she was a baby. Her parents thought they could not have any biological children of their own so they were delighted when the adoption agency told them that they would be the proud parents of a little baby girl. After adopting Jackie, needless to say, two years later they conceived and gave birth to a daughter of their own. A year later they had a son.
In Jackie’s mind she felt that her parents did not want her since they had their own biological children. As a young girl growing up Jackie was only four feet four inches tall with dark beady eyes and crooked teeth. She wore clothes that hugged her husky body appearing to be two sizes too small. All her clothes were dark in color and always looked worn and drab. Jackie spent most of her time locked in her room putting all kinds of weird posters on her walls
Jackie secretly hated her parents and her siblings. Jackie would sneak around the house to listen to her parent’s conversations so that she could ruin their plans. She would break things and blame someone else. She would manipulate situations which caused her father and mother to quarrel. She always made life difficult for everyone even though her parents tried everything to assure her that she was loved and adored. They tried to assure her that there was no need to be troublesome or to plot wicked things against them. Her parents were sure that she loved her siblings because it appeared that way and Jackie made sure it looked that way.
On many occasions, Jackie would stay home to take care of her sister and brother while her parents went out. Jackie never missed an opportunity to say or do horrible things to her siblings. She would torture them with a collection of bugs and make them sit still while the bugs crawled all over them. She would sometimes lock them in the attic the whole time while their parents were away; and just about the time her parents were expected to return home she would threaten them not to tell or next time she would make them sit in ice

cold bath water or eat dirt with worms in it from the flower pots that sat in their back yard.
Just recently, Ms. Matthews said Jackie’s siblings finally told their parents what had been going on when they were children. They told how they were tormented and how they suffered when they were left in Jackie’s care. She also said that Jackie’s parents broke down and wept and told the family how they had been tortured by Jackie as well. Jackie laughs at them and denies the accusations and said that none of them matter to her and never did. She still manages to do cruel and hatful things to her family even as an adult.

  12. Juliet Lee 2/2/12 Special Saturdays Assignment from 1/31/12

My brothers and I we all looked forward to Saturdays in our household. Our Saturday mornings started around 7:30 in the mornings. My mother never cooked breakfast or lunch for us on Saturday mornings. This was considered her “time off” day. What was so special about her not cooking breakfast or lunch for us was that we got the chance to choose whatever kind of cold cereal we liked for breakfast. For lunch my mother bought different types of deli meats and we would make our own specialty sub sandwiches just like the ones sold at our neighborhood store. My favorite brand of cereal was “sugar pops” and my brother’s were always “frosted flakes”. I can still remember my mother’s yellow robe with lace trim around the sleeves of her robe. She would sit on the edge of my bed and pat my shoulders to wake me up; she was always cheery and in good spirits.

After breakfast we would rush to clean up our rooms and get dressed. We would sweep the back stairs and gather all the soiled clothes from our hampers to take to the laundry room. If we finished in time we were allowed to watch our favorite cartoons until noon time. Saturdays were always special and fun for the entire family, my parents were able to relax and we got to do some of the things we couldn’t do during the week.

I can also remember us all being so anxious to finish our chores so that we could go out and play with our friends. We would visit our neighborhood swimming pool or sometimes we would go to the movies. I can remember the movie theater being fifty cents to get in. The pool opened at 1:00 and of course we wanted to be the first ones there; we would swim for hours on in. It was so hard to believe how quickly the time passed.

Around 4:30 or so, we would head back home for dinner because dinner always served by 5:30. Sometimes my mother would surprise us with Chinese food or Italian hotdogs with French fried potatoes. Often, we would be able to go back outside to play if the dinner dishes were cleaned and put away.

As the evening progressed, we would settle in and start on school projects and have family game time around the kitchen table. We often play monopoly or cards and talked. My father would challenge us to a friendly game of arm wrestling knowing that he would lose so that we could win. My mother would often surprise us with desserts of jello topped with whipped cream or with a dish of chocolate pudding. At round 9:00 we would prepare to go to bed.

  13. Dolores Umbridge: 1970- 1998

Mrs Umbridge was a witch who debuted as Defense against the dark arts professor at Hogwarts School. She was known for her cruelty and injustice punishments against students, especially Harry Potter. Due to her condescending ways most students hated her. If any student ever dared to spoke out openly in class they were immediately silenced or even worst, punished. Mrs Umbridge was a very short, stocky women resembling large pale toad. She had a chubby, flabby face, a wide slack mouth and a little neck. Her eyes were insomniac eyes, and in her brown hair she always wore a black velvet bow. She spoke with a high-pitched voice that was so girly. She would always say cruel things in sugary sweet voice. The sweeter her voice was the more dangerous she was. She was so obsessed with pink things that she had her office decorated with kittens and other things all pink. She also wore from head to toe matching outfits pink. Her thick, squat fingers were usually adorned with ugly old rings, which were pink as well.
She was so hypocrite and manipulator, she never really cared about teaching.
She was brutal, cruel, cold, inhuman, corrupt, ruthless, unmerciful, severe and devoid from moral or ethical values. Umbrigde was clearly an evil woman.
One day she wanted to teach Harry Potter a lesson about not telling lies, so she called Potter to detention.
“You know deep down that you deserve to be punished, don’t you Potter?” She asked with an evil smile in her face. She made him write one hundred times “I most not tell lies” with a blood quill. A blood quill is a type of pen does not require ink, it writes with the blood of the person using it. The continuous use of it will eventually scar back of the hand. Harry ended up with “I most not tell lies” in his hand. She firmly believed that justice is being done and that Harry is being taught a valuable lesson.
She only lasted for one year but that was enough time to mark in a very negative way the life of each student.

  14. A day just like any other

From Monday to Friday I used to get up at 6:00am to prepare myself to go to school. I always got up from my bed and went to my parents’ bed for ten minutes or maybe more. I’m the kind of person who needs to feel the pressure of running out of time to start doing some things, so finally I got up around 6:15 am and went rushed directly to the shower because I had to be at school by 7:00. Before leaving home I always took something from the kitchen to eat on my way to school.
I went to school from seven until two everyday, unless I had something to do after class. Since it’s a habit in my house to wait for everyone to eat, I used to take a nap before going to the table. After everyone arrived, my mom woke me up to eat. At the table we were my big brother, my mommy and daddy every day. Each one had its seat established. Nothing could alter it, that time was sacred.
Since I’ve always took nap first than eat, when I was finished eating I started right away with homework and stuff about school. Depending on the day it could be that I had some free time. In my free time I loved to go to my neighbor’s house, who is one of my best friends. We were always looking for something to do. We really had a very good time. When it started to become late at night, I returned to my house, which it was right in front, tired and the only thing I wanted was to sleep. I went to bed until the next day, the same or similar routine.

  15. Comparison to Ethel:

A about ten years ago I can recall a very large and particularly unusual family living in the house behind mine. I say particularly large unusual family loosely for a specific reason. After stepping of the bus one day from elementary school I can remember a large container sitting on an 18-wheeler sitting in the street near the family’s home. The 4-5 luxury cars they had vanished and the only thing left in the driveway were packed boxes being loaded onto the burgundy red container. For many months and years people in the neighborhood had wondered what the “family” did for a living. Multiple women were seen walking the neighborhood sidewalks with children of their own, and about 6 months pregnant. However there was only one man that was seen leaving and arriving from the house. On the kitchen counter the next week was an article in the local newspaper about a prostitute ring that was being run out of a local strip mall that was fronted as a message therapy spa. Further into the investigation police raided the house to find that the basement of the home had been converted into a baby pen. They were several small rooms with beds lying on the floor for the baby’s and infants to sleep on, doors to each room facing the opposite way, and no heat or air condition. It was later determined that the parents if you would like to even give them that title, would keep the infants in captivity locking them in their rooms for hours on end. Even as a young kid at the time it sickened me to know that those defenseless and helpless children could do nothing in their power to stop that from happening. Although names were never released I can accurately remember and depict the 3 women and one gentleman that lived and occupied that residence. The thought of putting children so young and unknowing into a situation such as that is disgraceful and despicable. It seizes to amaze me that one could have the audacity to do such a thing to helpless children. With all of that being said, that “family” if you would like to say will never leave my mind and the story that they presented to me indirectly will always live with me for as long as I live.

  16. In Class Writing 1/31/12:

I remember awakening to the start of water falling and hitting the bottom of the tub as my brother woke up and started his morning with that sound. With that I knew I had about an hour more to sleep before my mom would have to come and literally yank me out of bed. As a kid I was terrible at walking up in the morning, stagger my way out of my room and ascend to the bottom of the stairs where my backpack and shoes were laid out neatly. Since I never ate breakfast in the morning since it gave me the worst upset stomachs, I would grab my belongings, mommy would zip my coat up, and we’d walk out the door headed to the bus stop down the street. After arriving at school I can remember each of the agonizing subjects, writing, reading, math, science, and English seeming like an eternity to complete. It amazed me that recess and lunch seemed like warp speed while class time was in slow motion. My day would conclude with me re gathering my belongings, this time without moms help, and getting back on the bus headed home. The walk back to home was time spent socializing with friends recapping our days and the “cool” thing that had they had done or seen. Bestowed at the bottom of my driveway looking at my house my parents provided me I knew I was back at a place were I was loved and I could relax and be at ease. I would have a home cooked meal provided for me, complete my chores of either setting the table or taking out the trash, do my homework, then relax and watch a television show or two. After that I would proceed up to bed around 8, the latest, shower, brush my teeth and slip into bed where mom would tuck me in and give me a kiss on the forehead goodnight. Off to sleep I would get good rest and arise the next day to replay the events that I have just described to you here.

  17. First Homework Assignment: Revised:

I can recall having a great teacher in high school for my College Accounting 1 class. Her name was Mrs. Hunte and she is from the island of St. in the Caribbean. I can remember her high level of enthusiasm for teaching young kids in high school and the difficulties of accounting, but also how complexly interesting it is at the same time. Mrs. Hunte always wanted the best for the students so she pushed us very hard in the classroom but it was always worth the little tough love she imposed on the students that always seemed to shine on test days. Her island accent was tough to understand the first day of class, but it was an unusual change that I actually grew accustomed to by the second week of class. Sitting in the front of class I cannot recall every since one the countless conversations we heard either about our weekends, life, or even questions pertaining to class work. She always cared about the kids. Students like myself will always remember a teacher like her for her kindness and devotion to students and faculty alike, which makes for a great friend in and outside of the classroom. Mrs. Hunte always dressed in an appropriate business- like manner. Her black pants were cut off at a boot-cut length with her black dress shoes, usually heels that made her taller than she really was. The solid colored dress shirts seemed to always complement her slender figure. Even though Mrs. Hunte seemed very straight edged, an interesting fact I found out about her was that she was named Miss St. Kitts during the1980s, which year I do not remember exactly. During the beginning of the year I can also remember her telling us about her two daughters and beautiful and handsome husband whom she loved dearly. She was also a deeply faithful Christian and went to church religiously every Sunday with her loved ones. I have one fond memory of her speaking to me on the last day of class. I remember as I gave her a hug and left the classroom her saying in the sweetest and most compassionate sincere voice, “ Ryan, you are one of the hardest working and most genuine students I have ever encountered teaching at SBHS and wherever you decide to go in life I know that you will excel greatly given the hard work and dedication you have shown and put forth in my class room. I hope nothing but the best for you in your future, and keep in touch.” A statement like that coming from a teacher like her is something I didn’t find too rarely in high school, which is why Mrs. Hunte has had a great impact on me, and made me remember her for the great high school teacher she was to me, and continues to be to this day.

    JIM CROW “NEW” vs. “OLD”

Clearly, it is evident that both the “Old” and the “New” Jim Crow laws are a disguised system used for racial control. Both laws are portrayed to look like they celebrate freedom and equality but instead they promote segregation and racism against African Americans.

The method of incarceration of the black race as it is understood in the “New” Jim Crow in an attempt to segregate the black race is prevalent in today’s society. This is just another form of restraint toward blacks to strip them of social freedom and equality. Whereas in the “Old” Jim Crow they used similar ways of stripping blacks of their dignity and rights by “separate but equal” which means that the white race may have enforced equal right toward blacks but they did so by keeping them separate. These separations involved separate schools, buses and trains any place that was used for public gatherings. The “Old” Jim Crow was intentional race discrimination while the “New” Jim Crow is subtle.

There was lots of outright physical brutality enforcement by the “Old” Jim Crow laws. They consisted of hangings, tortures, terrorism and just breaking down of the black spirit.
There were white supremacy groups in defense of segregation which ended in riots to enforce the separation and eradication and annihilation of blacks.

Whereas in today’s society with the “New” Jim Crow many don’t really understand or can see the reality of what is truly going on. The same type of racial segregation still exists; it’s being done in such an underhanded way so as to mislead many. It is well known and recognized how many black people are targeted and put in jail and then labeled. This labeling stays with them making it difficult for them to join in with society once they are released. This incarceration is made to look like it was done to keep “drug dealers and/or offenders off the streets when in reality it was designed to segregate and separate the black race. History is repeating itself to the extent of what was done to blacks for over one hundred years.

Many may believe that the “Old” Jim Crow is dead however, it is still very much alive and continues to haunt the black race. Even though the black race has come a long way with the Civil Rights movements, blacks can’t forget the affects and the nature of the “Old” Jim Crow. The “New” Jim Crow is living and breathing as we speak but is only disguised to blind the black race of its calculating wrath.

    W.E.B. DE BOIS

WEB DeBois was born on February 1868 and died on August of 1963. DeBois was born in Massachusetts in a relatively tolerant community where he experienced very little racism while growing up. WEB Bois first encountered Jim Crow segregation when he was a student at Fisk College in Tennessee between the years 1885-1888. This was around the time of Jim Crow in the 1890’s. DeBois held many titles throughout his life; he was a historian, civil rights activist, and an author. His primary focus was to fight against racism by protesting against the lynching and discrimination against the education and employment of the black race. One of his beliefs was that blacks should have a chance to excel in education so that they can become capable people in leadership positions.

During the World War 1 period lots of rioting and beatings took place. Many blacks were beaten and massacred by whites because of the hiring of blacks to replace striking white workers. DeBois was so appalled by the horrific actions that he organized the “Silent Parade”. This was a march that took place in New York with about 9,000 African American demonstrating for Civil Rights. There was also another riot that took place in Houston, Texas around 1917 that was also very disturbing. During this riot, the police arrested and beat two black solders and, in retaliation, over 100 black solders went out and killed 16 white people. As a result, sixteen of the black people were court marshaled and hung and about 67 of them were put in jail.

DeBois, was also the founder of the Niagara Movement advocating civil rights for blacks. The organization was short-lived but it led him towards becoming a part of the NAACP which was founded in 1909. He opposed the mistreatment and portrayal of African Americans.

“Once we were told: Be worthy and fit and the ways are open. Today the avenues of advancement in the army, navy, and civil service, and even in business and professional life, are continually closed to black applicants of proven fitness, simply on the bald excuse of race and color.”
By: DuBois, address at Fourth Niagara conference, 1908.
